The July 30 Breakfast Club speaker is Linda Murphree, a principal with Urbielewicz Murphree CPAs, PC, in Corrales, a firm that provides fiduciary and trustee services, as well as tax planning/preparation for businesses and individuals. Her topic is: “Choosing an Executor for Your Will or Trust.” Subtitle: “When it is NOT a good idea to choose adult children or a friend to be the executor of your estate.” A lot of estate planning is just that–what you plan before you die. But after you die, who will carry out the provisions of your will or trust? Who can take off several months or even longer to close out your estate?

It is not always a good idea to choose your sibling or son or daughter who works full-time in another state, and who may even be caring for other elders or children at the same time. If you are single, choosing a friend may not be the best choice either. Would your 88-year old best friend be able to carry out your wishes? Probably not.

It is a simple process to designate a fiduciary who is not a member of your family, who could work with someone you choose. But who still makes the decisions? Can you have a co-executor? Learn what to look for in an executor, how a fiduciary acts as an executor, and why a smaller firm (vs. a large national bank) is more favorably positioned to help your designated executor to close out your estate and the steps you can take now, while you are alive, to make the process run more smoothly.

Reminders: No reservations needed, and no need to call to say you are going to attend. There are individual checks (add a tip) that you pay after the program is over. There is a discount for seniors. No speakers in November or December.
